Soundtrack evaluation

For both of the video clips I first used iMovie to cut the clip down to part of the scene which I want. Both of the clips are 30 seconds long. Afterwards I dragged the clips into garageband and muted the original clip so I am able to record the dialogue for the video. Before I recorded I wrote a script so i know what I am saying and I don't mess up the words and it is able to be in sync with the video. For the recording, I recorded on garageband on a laptop because I was able to record in a quiet room so there wouldn't be any background noise. Each time I messed up i paused it and started again from where i paused the clip.  With recording the dialogue I also watched the video while recording so i can see if i am in sync with the video. For the foley sound effect for the soundtrack i also used garageband to record it because I believe it was the easiest way to record and transfer the recording onto the recording on the mac. The foley sound effect which I recorded was stamping my feet and walking for the video for both of the final soundtrack. We had to create two different soundtrack and one of the videos didn't have to have dialogue in it but both of the clips which i chose had dialogue in it so I had to do dialogue for both of the videos. Garageband is a good software to use because it was simple to use and that when you record and transfer from the laptop too the mac.

The first soundtrack which I done was a scene from Parents Trap. I believe that the mood of the video changed when i added the voice over and the music in the background but there is a meaning to it and I believe that it is a shown effectively from the music which was chosen. The music was calm and it related to the music in the original clip. As i went along i didn't change anything, I stuck to what I wrote in the proposal. I recorded the voiceovers by myself because it fit the video well and I believe it only needed one person for the dialogue but I believe it went well and the sync of the voiceover with the original video is mostly in sync and you are able to hear the dialogue along with the music and the sound effects which is good because you are able to see the meaning and the mood of the final soundtrack.

The second soundtrack which I done was from Toy Story 3 where they were on the train. It was all western and country. The mood and meaning from the soundtrack I believe is communicated effectively with the type of background music I chose for the soundtrack. It fit well with what is happening in the scene where they are in the county side on a train. My practice work matched with the proposal that I done and most of it was in sync with the original video. It all went well and it didnt change the meaning or the mood from the film.

Final proposal

I will be creating two soundtracks and we have to wipe out all of the audio and put all of the dialogue and audio back ourselves.
Soundtrack 1
Description of sequence: The name of the film which I will be using a clip from is Parent Trap and the clip will be 30 seconds long. The clip which I will be using is when they find out they are twins in the cabin. The director is of the film is Nancy Meyers.

Sound effect information: I will be getting sound effects for the sound track from free sound and YouTube. These places are good for the type of sound effects for my soundtrack. A sound effect which I will be using is a twinkle sound at the end of the scene which can shows happiness between them as at the beginning they didn't like each other.  There will also be a foley sound effect where I will be creating the sound myself. There won't be any copyright issues with this because I will be getting sound effect that has no copyright.

Music Information: The music which I will be using happy music which is going to be violin because it is calming and the it is a sign of peace and relief. This can effect the mood of the scene and the audience because of what is happening in the scene and it can show that it is happy and things are figured out. It is going to be non diegetic music because it isn't happening in the scene as they have added the music in after. I am going to be getting these off youtube because i believe that is a good place for music. Another sound track which I will be using is

Spoken word information: I will be writing a script for what I will be saying. I will be recording the dialogue on garageband on laptop because it will be easier and that I will be able to record in a quiet room and there won't be any background music and I will be able to hear myself while I am talking. The mood of the dialogue will be suspenseful but happy at the same time because they will be happy to find out that they are sisters. There won't be any lip syncing but we have to try to match the timing of the dialogue on the original scene.I will be the only one which will be speaking within in the scene because as they are twins the twins sound alike so I believe that i should be the only one talking within the scene.

Personnel: For this scene i won't be working with anyone such for the dialogue but for the foley sound effects i will be working with one other person.

Recording location, equipment and software: The recording location will be in a quiet room which is 219. I am recording in there because its a small room and that there is no lesson in there so i believe it is a perfect room to record in. The equipment which I will be using is a laptop for recording the dialogue and the foley sound effects on. I will also be using the mac which i will be finding all of the music and editing the scenes on. The software which i will be using is garageband and i will be editing on the software. The advantages of using all this is that with garageband you are able to watch the video while you are recording so you are able to see if you are in sync with the original or not. The disadvantage is that for the foley sound effect you don't have a lot of options of what you are able to use because we are in college and we don't know if the sound effect is gonna fit with the scene. Another disadvantage is that if the video is long you need to crop the scene down and some parts of the scene might be important. Also while you are recording you could mess up as you can't understand every word they are saying within the video. My workshop experience was good because I got to learn how to use garageband and but i found it hard to find sound effects and scene which i wanted to use and which would work well with the scene and if i can record the dialogue.

Soundtrack 2
Description of the sequence: The name of the film is toy story 3 and I will be cutting down the clip to 30 seconds long. The clip which i will be using for Toy story 3 is the western scene where they are on the train and the train starts coming apart and as people are trying to get them. The director of the film is Lee Unkrich.

Sound effect information: For the sound effects I will be getting them from free sound and YouTube because i believe that they have good sound effects there that i will be looking for and they are reliable. The sound effects which I will be using is a shooting sound when mr potato head comes out of the train. This sound effect builds suspense and no one know what is going to happen and that it can change the mood of the scene from the beginning. Another sound effect which i will be using is a lassing sound when woody comes to the rescue and attacks this. This can show that someone is here to help and save from what they are doing from stealing anything. A foley sound effect which I am going to do is when woody steps on him so the sound effect is going to be stamp on the floor and it shows that they have lost and someone is in charge and they aren't going to steal anything.

Music Information: The music which I will be using is from Youtube and the genre of the music will be western and it will be fast pace which will match what is in the scene. At the beginning of the scene everything is fine and the train is going somewhere and throughout the scene everything is fast pace such as when they are fighting and jumping from the different carriages. The music is non diegetic because it will be added into the scene and you won't be able to hear it when it happens. The mood of the scene is suspenseful and quick and everything is happening fast and quick paced which helps the scene pealed to the scene and the music fits well with the scene.

Spoken word information: I will be writing a script for the dialogue which is spoken in the scene. This will be easier and help us keep in sync with what they are saying in the scene. There will be more than one person talking because there are different characters in the scene. From part of the scene which i will be using there are 3 characters. For the dialogue we will all be recording at different times because i believe that it will be easier and in the quiet room we will be able to think quicker and also we can be in more sync with our character. The mood of the spoken word will be suspenseful as no one will know what is happening and if the others will be saved.

Personnel: I will be working with 2 other people for the dialogue as there are 3 characters within the scene and for the sound effect i will be doing them myself and there isn't a need for other people. I will be recording the sound effect in the room 219.

Adding sound effects and evaluation

The scene which I chose to add sound effects is from Blade of Glory and its about ice skating. From the scene i went into iMovie crop part of the scene which I wanted to add sound effects for. Afterwards I opened the clip on garageband and muted all of the music for the sound effects which I have chosen. I also created a foley sound effect which is sound that i do myself. The sound effect which I done is drums by banging on the table which shows excitement and something is going to happen. The reasons which I chose these sound effects because I believe they went well with the clip and it helps builds the excitement and it has an effect on the mood of the video by adding the sound effects to it and there is also a meaning because they are happy to see each other.

Adding music workshop and evaluation

The methods we were able to choose from for adding our music is by finding music from youtube or free sound then add it to the clip which we chose and we are able to fade in and out with the music and the music should fit the scene. The other method is that we create the music ourselves from the instruments on garageband and it will have to fit with the scene which you have chosen to put the music over with. For this workshop I decided to choose the first method because I believe it was the easiest way and i could find music which would fit with the scene. The scene I chose was when the twins are in the cabin and they find out that they are twins and they are really happy. I found the music on youtube and converted it to a MP3. I believe the song fit well and the music was instrumental as the original was instrumental as well. I decided the music would be similar to the original. It is happy and calming and it is like a sign of relief that they are talking and they found out something exciting about each other. The meaning of the music which I chose I wanted the mood to be happy and things will get better from this and they will be able to be together again.

dubbing dialogue and evaluation

We had to do a dubbing workshop and first we had to choose which clip we were going to use to dub over and then afterwards we had to create it into an MP4 and write a script so we know what they are saying at what time. After we have finished we had to export it and then put it onto blogger. I believe the technical success with my dubbing was kind of a success most of it was in sync but i believe some parts wasn't because I couldn't keep in sync with the dialogue as parts were going too fast and then when i tried to pause it to start again it would keep going on.

Workshop dialogue script

What's the matter?
Hallie what's your mother like?
I never met her,her and my dad split up when I was a baby or before but I know she was really really beautiful

Can you stop thinking of your stomach at a time like this?
A time like what?
I mean think about it,i only have a mother and you only have a father
You've never seen your mum and i've never seen my dad, you have one whole picture of your mum and I have one whole picture of my dad.
Well your is probably a whole picture, mines a pathetic little thing all crinkled and ripped right down the middle
What are you rummaging in your trunk for?

Assignment 1- Moving image soundtrack report

Scene 1
The mood and meaning are created with different sound elements. There are different types of spoken word, music and sound effects. The first scene which I will be analysing is a film from Children of men and they were in the car together. The dialogue within the scene is louder than the background music. The conversations which they have is realistic dialogue. We can tell that it is realistic by the way they were speaking to each other and also what they were talking about such as memories from the past. Then throughout the scene they all start panicking and don't know what is going on and start shouting at each other to try to listen to each other. This is able to create the mood in the moving images because from what they are saying it relates to what is happening within the scene and it also builds tension for the audience. There is also functional dialogue such as 'Get in the car' and 'Go' which shows they were all panicking and it supported the action well.

The music within the scene such as the music on the radio is diegetic sound because it was on the radio and you were still able to hear it. Even though you can't hear it throughout the whole scene you know it is still playing because as its diegetic you know it should still be playing as its the car radio. This helps everyone feel like they are in the scene and also the mood changes with the music as everyone is feeling different emotions such as when she get shot in the neck. The music was loud and mood was sad as everyone doesn't know what was going on at the time. The tone within the scene changes at the beginning it is happy and then it changes throughout the scene because there were a lot of tension as there were shooting and everyone was scared and didn't know what was going on. They were panicking which showed the mood of everyone but also the audience is able to see how scared they are and don't know what is going to happen which build tension and it matches the genre of the film which is horror. There wasn't any score for this particular scene but there was establishing sound which was the radio because it was always in the scene even though sometimes you were able to hear it but as it is diegetic music you know it is alway there.

The sound FX for this scene within children of men is that there was a car engine which is throughout the whole scene because as its diegetic sound you will be able to always hear it. This is hyper real because they made it as realistic as they can and it sounds like it was actually in the scene. Also there were bird tweeting at the end to make it sound like that it's the end of the scene and that things are back to normal as everything is calmer from all of the shooting as there were gun shot and police siren. There was synchronous sound effects which is when you can see the cause of the sound for example when the women got shot in the neck but also when the car crashed at the beginning which set off the police siren. There wasn't any non synchronous as we were able to see everything within the shot and we could see all of the sound effects which matched with part of the scene. This was able to create mood because from the sound effects the audience was able to see what was going on. There was an ambient which means that it was nothing to do with the scene. The sound effect was the birds at the end, it was from people talking memories in the car to shooting and people dying then there was birds tweeting at the end while they were driving off after being annoyed with each other. Another sound effect was the table tennis bouncing at the beginning. They were playing with it and you were able to see it bouncing off the windows which is synchronous. This affected the mood of the scene and the audience will be able to see it from everyone being happy to everyone being scared and don't know what has happened.

Scene 2
The second scene which I will be analysing is a scene in The Shawshank Redemption. They use voiceovers for parts of the dialogue. This scene is when they are on the roof top cleaning and the police are talking.  At the beginning they use voiceovers to show us what is going on and tell us than us trying to work out in such a long scene. The dialogue is realistic. They are on the roof as they are working in a prison and what has been happening while he has been there and things he has been through. There isn't much music in the background while they were talking. The police are talking about politics and they are annoyed about something. With voiceovers it can help show what they are thinking and it helps the actors show more emotion in the scene. This can change the mood of the scene but also the audience who are watching the film. The workers were listening to the police conversation. They made it as realistic as they can to be in a prison. With the dialogue they used different tone of voice which was able to change the mood of the scene and also the characters. With the mood at the beginning of the scene it was cold but then it got warmer for the workers because they got drinks at the end which made them happy and calmer at the end of the scene. They didn't repeat any words but they were having an argument and the worker got the security guard to listen to what he had to say.

The music within the scene it were non diegetic so the added the music in after so they couldn't hear t it while they were filming. The music they added at the beginning was old and sad so you could tell that they all weren't happy within the scene. They added the music with the voiceover which was quieter than the voiceovers. This is because you will be able to hear the voiceovers from the tone they were talking in. While they were talking having a drink they were voiceovers and music and the music in the background was calming because they all felt relieved and that everything was sorted out from how the music and their facial expressions within the scene. The genre of music sounded country from where they were and the type of music which they used in the background. The tone of music was warm and they know what they are doing and there was a sign of happiness fro the security guards but also the workers as they were feeling scared before. There was a sound motif which was at the beginning and the end of the scene. They repeated the same piece of music which is relating to the same characters.

There isn't much sound effects within this scene but there was a bit used. The sound FX which they used was when they were cleaning the oil. This sound FX was synchronous because you were able to see them do it at the same time as the sound effect. With this you are able to feel the emotion because you are able to see what is going on and you know how to feel. Another sound effect is when the security is threatening the person to go off the roof there and it was also synchronous because you were able to see what is happening and this builds tension because you don't know what is going to happen such as if he does push him off the roof or let him off.

Evaluation

At the beginning of the single camera production we had to research different type of films and help with an idea of a short film we were going to do. After we thought of a short film idea we start planning our short film. Some things which we added into the film planning was the plot, genre and if its single or multi strand narrative.

After we have completed our film planning we got into groups an decided on which idea we were doing to be producing. When we decided on the idea which we were doing we started completing our pitch which we were going to show to the producer who agreed on the idea with us. We started completing our group planning such as storyboard and our health and safety sheet of anything that could happen and how we will be ale to prevent it. Once all of that was done we had to create a production diary of all of the shots we were going to film on the day and we had to do that every time we filmed any shots. When we filmed the footage we transferred all of it onto our computers so we were able to look at the footage and start editing. The contributions I did within in this film was that I did some of the paperwork and i am also the director and an actor within our film. I was the main actor within the film.

I didn't talk within it as we were going to do voiceovers for  few parts within the film. The short film is suppose to be a comedy and with no voice and just sound it would be more funny. Other things i did within the production was putting all of the our clips onto the computers so we were both able to get the footage to edit.  The postproduction decisions we done were some of the locations because we weren't able to film within as we didn't get time and also we didn't get the permission to film in there. The location was the science labs. Instead of filming within the science lab we filmed in another classroom and then wrote on the board what class this was and the students were studying. We filmed with different shots and also a few extra shots which we thought would fit within the short film. The film should be at least 4 minutes so 3 mins but edited very well. Another decision we made was using a few students and not too many because everyone will be doing the same thing but also as it's the last school but also an all girls school.

Even though we made a few changes I believe they were appropriate and that it has helped our video. Also some other changes which we made are the props which we intensionally were going to use but some we didn't use and we changed a few things instead such as a text book. I believe that my film was quite successful compared to the intensional plan because shots which we filmed were good and that it matched with what we wanted as planned on the storyboard. My original expectation with editing the film I thought it would be better than how I planned and also with some of the sound which I have i couldn't find the correct sound effects which i wanted so i had to improvise with what they had on the internet. Also i edited how it was planned on the storyboard and the plot is linear so it was beginning to end. The film examples we have studied were better than what i have edited because it was made more clear of what is happening but also it had suspense because no one knew what was going to happen next and how it was going to end.

I think that the audience reaction would be that they wonder what will happen next but also they will laugh because it is suppose to be a comedy for example the teacher sleeping in class while the students are studying. The short film isn't emotional but you might be few scares and you might be confused as they might not know what is going on. All of the lighting we filmed during the day so the footage is good and it isn't blurry.

The genre is comedy and horror but it is more on the comedy side. The mise n scene is in the classroom, corridor but also inside and outside of the college which the settings are. There were a few problems while we were filming because we were filming along the corridor and loads of people were trying to walk past which slowed down the process of us filming and also other people are also filming in the classroom we needed to film at so we had to find a different time to film which was annoying to us. Not all of the time we had the costumes so we had to compromise with what we had on the day. Overall I believe the short film went well but i believe the editing i could of done better.
