Assignment 1- Moving image soundtrack report

Scene 1
The mood and meaning are created with different sound elements. There are different types of spoken word, music and sound effects. The first scene which I will be analysing is a film from Children of men and they were in the car together. The dialogue within the scene is louder than the background music. The conversations which they have is realistic dialogue. We can tell that it is realistic by the way they were speaking to each other and also what they were talking about such as memories from the past. Then throughout the scene they all start panicking and don't know what is going on and start shouting at each other to try to listen to each other. This is able to create the mood in the moving images because from what they are saying it relates to what is happening within the scene and it also builds tension for the audience. There is also functional dialogue such as 'Get in the car' and 'Go' which shows they were all panicking and it supported the action well.

The music within the scene such as the music on the radio is diegetic sound because it was on the radio and you were still able to hear it. Even though you can't hear it throughout the whole scene you know it is still playing because as its diegetic you know it should still be playing as its the car radio. This helps everyone feel like they are in the scene and also the mood changes with the music as everyone is feeling different emotions such as when she get shot in the neck. The music was loud and mood was sad as everyone doesn't know what was going on at the time. The tone within the scene changes at the beginning it is happy and then it changes throughout the scene because there were a lot of tension as there were shooting and everyone was scared and didn't know what was going on. They were panicking which showed the mood of everyone but also the audience is able to see how scared they are and don't know what is going to happen which build tension and it matches the genre of the film which is horror. There wasn't any score for this particular scene but there was establishing sound which was the radio because it was always in the scene even though sometimes you were able to hear it but as it is diegetic music you know it is alway there.

The sound FX for this scene within children of men is that there was a car engine which is throughout the whole scene because as its diegetic sound you will be able to always hear it. This is hyper real because they made it as realistic as they can and it sounds like it was actually in the scene. Also there were bird tweeting at the end to make it sound like that it's the end of the scene and that things are back to normal as everything is calmer from all of the shooting as there were gun shot and police siren. There was synchronous sound effects which is when you can see the cause of the sound for example when the women got shot in the neck but also when the car crashed at the beginning which set off the police siren. There wasn't any non synchronous as we were able to see everything within the shot and we could see all of the sound effects which matched with part of the scene. This was able to create mood because from the sound effects the audience was able to see what was going on. There was an ambient which means that it was nothing to do with the scene. The sound effect was the birds at the end, it was from people talking memories in the car to shooting and people dying then there was birds tweeting at the end while they were driving off after being annoyed with each other. Another sound effect was the table tennis bouncing at the beginning. They were playing with it and you were able to see it bouncing off the windows which is synchronous. This affected the mood of the scene and the audience will be able to see it from everyone being happy to everyone being scared and don't know what has happened.

Scene 2
The second scene which I will be analysing is a scene in The Shawshank Redemption. They use voiceovers for parts of the dialogue. This scene is when they are on the roof top cleaning and the police are talking.  At the beginning they use voiceovers to show us what is going on and tell us than us trying to work out in such a long scene. The dialogue is realistic. They are on the roof as they are working in a prison and what has been happening while he has been there and things he has been through. There isn't much music in the background while they were talking. The police are talking about politics and they are annoyed about something. With voiceovers it can help show what they are thinking and it helps the actors show more emotion in the scene. This can change the mood of the scene but also the audience who are watching the film. The workers were listening to the police conversation. They made it as realistic as they can to be in a prison. With the dialogue they used different tone of voice which was able to change the mood of the scene and also the characters. With the mood at the beginning of the scene it was cold but then it got warmer for the workers because they got drinks at the end which made them happy and calmer at the end of the scene. They didn't repeat any words but they were having an argument and the worker got the security guard to listen to what he had to say.

The music within the scene it were non diegetic so the added the music in after so they couldn't hear t it while they were filming. The music they added at the beginning was old and sad so you could tell that they all weren't happy within the scene. They added the music with the voiceover which was quieter than the voiceovers. This is because you will be able to hear the voiceovers from the tone they were talking in. While they were talking having a drink they were voiceovers and music and the music in the background was calming because they all felt relieved and that everything was sorted out from how the music and their facial expressions within the scene. The genre of music sounded country from where they were and the type of music which they used in the background. The tone of music was warm and they know what they are doing and there was a sign of happiness fro the security guards but also the workers as they were feeling scared before. There was a sound motif which was at the beginning and the end of the scene. They repeated the same piece of music which is relating to the same characters.

There isn't much sound effects within this scene but there was a bit used. The sound FX which they used was when they were cleaning the oil. This sound FX was synchronous because you were able to see them do it at the same time as the sound effect. With this you are able to feel the emotion because you are able to see what is going on and you know how to feel. Another sound effect is when the security is threatening the person to go off the roof there and it was also synchronous because you were able to see what is happening and this builds tension because you don't know what is going to happen such as if he does push him off the roof or let him off.
